I would say for a girl either Misty of Chincoteague by Marguerite Henry or The Mouse and the Motorcycle and/or Runaway Ralph by Beverly Cleary. I remember reading both (and many more) when I was that age, my sister is 12 right now and she likes Runaway Ralph.

For a boy I would say The Black Stallion by Walter Farley or Lost in the Barrens by Farley Mowat.
I have included links below to a plot summary and info about each book, hope this helps!!

I don't have just one book, but I have a whole series of books that I strongly recommend for 12 year olds but your gonna have to hunt for them. Its a series called "That Happy Hollisters". Pete, Pam, Ricky, Holly, and Sue, and their Parents, are always trying to solve some type of mystery. They're written by: the Pen-Name Jerry West (Really actually: Andrew Svenson). These books are GREAT! There isn't any violence, no sex, no drugs, nothing but a group of kids that are having fun as they solve mysteries. In fact, Pete the oldest boy in the book is 12 years old too. Great books to try. They are available online at Amazon.com or often times in your local libraries.

At twelve, I read:

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte
Lorna Doone by R. D. Blackmore
Any of the Nancy Drew mysteries
The Little White Horse by Elizabeth Goudge
A Wrinke in Time by Madeleine L'Engle
Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery
The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
The Secret Garden by Frances Hodgson Burnett

I almost forgot!
Are You There God? It's Me, Margaret by Judy Blume

Hmm...that's all I can think of.

I would suggest Goose Girl by Shannon Hale. It has it all: adventure, excitement, romance. Although it wasn't around when I was twelve. My favorite book at that age was Gone With The Wind by Margaret Mitchell.
