To expand on what "Ry Ry" stated below, I should have used the term "significant". Even the "Passion" movie received awards in minor categories.

umm, i thought it wasn't that good. I almost threw up at parts because the whole movie was gross and had WAYYY too much blood and gore. It was an o.k. movie, probably won't win any "significant" Oscar.

Should be interesting to see what they do. I think Gibson is one of the best movie-makers ever. I live very close to the Hollywood area, and love its geographical beauty. I agree with your use of the word "weirdo". They sure are.

Well I have not seen the film but any film with massive amounts of violence in it is good in my book.

And as far as poor behavior exempting you from winning remember Roman Polanski won best director for The Pianist.

He may get a nomination, but I doubt he'll get serious consideration. Academy awards seem to rarely be based on merit, more often they go to who "plays nice" and occasionally for life time contributions. ( I can't believe we passed them over alllllll these years, it's about time we give them an award )

i haven't seen it but if mel gibson is on it i'll go right know!!! i think he is great and something so important like the oscar's should be more objective
