NO multiculturalism doesn` t work
It only works if other cultures integrate into the society they live in .
In the UK the jews, Poles,Chinese,Vietnamese, Indians ( just to name a few) accepted our way of of life and laws.
Unfortunately theres always one bad egg in a basket,In our case it`s the muslims. They don`t want to and aren`t willing to integrate , they want
1) sharia law
2) they`re own parliament
3) they don`t accept any other religion except the archaic one they follow, they refuse to accept our laws, they want to live in they`re own communities.
The sad thing is all the other races and religions had a hard time when they came here being called names like chink, wog etc, but eventually they where accepted and no special laws where introduced for them unlike the Pakistani and Bangladeshi and other muslin races. The government has caved in so many times to appease them they expect the rest of the country to do the same.Until the muslim races accept our laws and way of life they never will integrate or be accepted.

"The right to be different, the duty to integrate: that is what being British means. " Tony Blair.

Which sounds almost oxymoronic, but there is a genuine tension.
The tyranny of an imposed conformity is not to be wished for.
But neither is a society fragmented into cultural and racial enclaves.
So what's the alternative but trying for tolerant diversity around a core set of common values? (and there will be enough of a row about those: who do YOU support at cricket?)

For America, the same tension can be expressed taking the mythic ideal of "freedom" and putting it alongside the mythic ideal of "the melting pot.": E Pluribus Unum, as the motto says.
What if, exercising freedom, some choose not to be melted down to the American ideal, or norm?

Not liking either extreme, I've got to opt for some degree of multiculturalism. But I think we are overdue for a clear statement of the responsibilities as well as the rights of being a citizen.

Apparently not. I'm not socially ignorant and I am fully aware that racism is alive and well, worldwide. However, I simply find it astounding and quite sad to see just how many people try to rationalize and justify their bigotry and ignorance by "asking" questions such as yours.
"Multiculturalism." Interesting term. Wasn't aware that the natural blending of cultures in society was an "ism", but hey, why not. What is so profoundly sad about this subject and the perpetuation of misunderstanding and ignorance reflected in the similarity between your question and those of others like you (okay-breathe) is that instead of taking the chance to see all the incredible things that different cultures can give each other, people like you continue to isolate and separate yourselves from the kinds of thoughts that can give meaning and substance to your lives. So, the short version of my answer is, no. It doesn't work. In the UK and here in America, "closet racism" will continue to prevent our race, by that, I mean the "human race" from advancing into a society that will be ready for the technological advances that would allow us to participate in the betterment of mankind. Too bad, really. Like the great Louis Armstrong once said..."What a wonderful world".

It's a lovely idea...that's all...no it doesn't work (at the moment) reason being that at some point one culture will confront or become an obstacle for another....and it seems that no-one has the answer to such conflicts and no-one apparently cares.

The governments idea of insisting on a multi-racial community is based on economic growth...(of their wallets) being a multi-racial country we should have a multi-racial body addressing and assessing possible and existing multi-cultural stumbling blocks. Creating cultural/racial pockets of habitat only adds to the dilemma, whereby boundarys are created...experiencing other cultures should be an enjoyable, learning experience....why do people go abroad for their hols then come back to the UK and moan about their neighbours....didnt they go abroad to sample the flavour of a different culture...?

My thoughts are that you have an agenda.

In some places there is ample evidence of what we call multiculturalism working fine until some one upsets the applecart, then toleration gets burned ~ with fuel added to the fire by those groups who thrive on that sort of strife.

Either group fear a loss of their identity and the authority / power they 'Claim' from within it.

I can understand their fear, but have no compassion for that child-like 'ranting' which also claims ''I must have, because I WANT.''

Sash.

get rid of racism and bigotry and prejudice nevertheless stay. What that suggests is : whether the white god have been given right here alongside and eradicated each and all the brown skinned persons from the Earth and left no longer something besides the shown fact that white persons...Who will team up per revenues, mind, hair colour, eye colour, ancestral origins, etc..etc.. you in all probability could have the white skinned Levi wearers waging war in direction of the white skinned Wrangler fans. all of us is animals. ALL people. Survival of the fittest will in any respect circumstances reign splendid over the Human Race.

Multiculturalism only works when ALL cultures respect All other cultures and All other cultures eventually meld in to the majority culture. If one culture disregards the majority culture then Multiculturalism is doom for failure.

yes, provided it's not forced. The Japanese liking baseball? Awesome. Religion or government forced with a gun to the back of one's head? Not so awesome.
