What I think you need to do is find out what the republicans and democrats really stand for. And not through Yahoo Answer either! You need to interview real politians and find out the real deal from both sides. That's how I decided that I would be a Democrat. Find out which side matches your ethical and political values, then choose. Don't just be what your told to be.

while I'm an independent, for the sake of argument I'd like to imitate an earlier answer to balance it out (some of the structure doesn't make sense, but hey that's the original poster's fault):

I believe in more of a hands off government. The government is supposed to serve all the people. It is not supposed to suppress the masses to serve the wealthy. People should get what they earn. Yes, that means there is some inequality. Hey, I couldn't choose to be born into a wealthy family; why don't I deserve a trust fund?
Put another way, I am against programs resembling fascism. I am against tieing peoples hands when they have brown skin. I recognize that conservatives align politically with communists and fascists because they don't care how they win office so long as they win, and they feel that the means don't matter so long as they get the proper ends (their candidates).
Not all Republican ideas are this extreme. BUT, some are. Democrats have many (different) problems too. Between the two, I lean Democrat.

Basic party platform and ideals. Republican. I believe in more of a hands off government. The government is supposed to serve the people. It is not supposed to treat them like children. People should work and learn and grow. People should earn what they get. Sometimes they should get what they earn. Yes, that means there is some inequality. Hey, I don't produce millions, why should I get millions.
Put another way, I am against programs resembling socialism. I am against tieing peoples hands when they want to better themselves. My grandfather could have received aid if he destroyed his garden. He was not allowed to produce food for his family. He asked for help. He was essentially told we'll only help you if you are helpless. He worked hard and took care of his family without letting socialist ideas destroying his will to better himself and provide for his family.
Not all Democratic ideas are this extreme. BUT, some are. Republicans have problems too. Between the two, I choose Republican.

I too went from independent to Republican when the Democrats went Socialist (they really need to rename their party).

My ancestors fought in the American Revolution, and many since then have giving their lives for the Constitution and the liberties I enjoy today. I rather despise the liberals for the disrespect they show our country and the principles it was founded on. If they would leave the Constitution alone I think I would chill a bit, but they work hard at destroying it.

Democrat or Republican? Why?

Exactly! Why?
Neither party affords voters any real choices. This corrupt two-party political system has a stranglehold on America's right to choose capable, qualified, 'clean' candidates.
The 'Republicrats' have corrupted the system to a point where most people don't even bother to vote anymore (and the politicians prefer that, because it increases their chances of being re-elected).
American consumers have multiple choices in everything from cars to cucumbers. But, when it comes to electing public servants, we have only a choice between the lesser of two evils. -RKO-

I was riding the train recently when a woman and a man (strangers) next to me began to converse. They identified themselves as liberals by commenting on recent elections and then the topic changed to riding the train. The woman commented that even though she knew her daily trip was the full fare, she paid the local (lower) rate. The man then followed with an explanation that he was just under the senior discounted rate yet he always claimed to be a senior.

Liberals feel above the law. There is an entitlement issue with Liberals not present in Republicans.

My party, the Republican party believes in hard work, opportunity, and justice.

Republican because they dont want a government that is built to support people. They belive everybody should start out equal and what you do with your life is up to you, instead of babysitting you if you decide to not do anything.

Middle. no real choice and not independent. They both have ideas that are worthy of recognition (surprisingly) and to agree with solely one would be putting myself in a position where i could not fully agree/ disagree every time.
