You do need to relax. Best bet is to NOT look, and breathe DEEPLY. If you need to bring a teddy bear with you to squeeze, instead of your pelvic muscles, feel free.
But really, it's up to you. Just take deep breaths and make a conscious effort to NOT clench up.
You can also ask the doctor to warm the gel they use on the speculum, or warm the speculum itself so that the shock of the cold doesn't cause you to clench. You may also ask if they have a plastic or molded speculum, instead of a metal one, as they tend to feel a little less cold when inserted.

When we do a pap in our office the doctor tells the patient to relax and breathe. Sometimes it helps to think of something else also. Don't be scared just learn to relax. good luck.

Just try and relax, look up and try to focus on one thing, or try having your bestfriend or someone your close to come with you, you will be more relaxed.

Try taking a friend or mom with you to talk to / distract you. Take a cd player and listen to music.

This happens to alot of people, just close your eyes, picture you are someplace else, and breathe deep, it will be over before you know it.
