Get together some photographs of them and/or of the things they love and get a custom calendar made. Any photo processing place /or site will be able to do it. It is in expensive, it is thoughtful and it is something they will be able to use all year!

The best gift you can give someone who has helped you out is to spend the time and thought to write a special letter or note expressing how special they are to you and how they have impacted your life. If the things they have helped you with brings them to mind when you see or do something, mention what/when it is and how you feel about them. Let them know what great rolemodels they are and how you would like to make an impact in life like they have. It would be nice to write it on nice paper/stationary/notecard, complete with envelope.
Include a small token along with it. Something handmade would be great - make an ornament using things at a local hobby/craft store. It would give them something to look at every year when unpacking/hanging ornaments and bring a smile to their face and warmth to their hearts.
Or storebought...It could be small box of chocolates - most people like an occasional candy, a little set of notecards/stationary or if you really put some thought into it - something that would match their interests. For golfers - some golfballs or tees.
The trinket/token doesn't need to be elegant... The message in the letter is what will touch their hearts and feel their gift was well received.

Rich people like homemade goodies as much as the rest of us.
I also like the calendar idea.
Maybe you could compile an album of old family photos or the family tree. A family cookbook? Family scrapbook?
You could also make a donation to a charity in their honor.
Good luck!

There are some glamorous Christmas cards with a small piece of original art on the front...they are suitable for framing and one of a kind. Smart galleries and boutiques have them. Good taste doesn't cost big bucks.

Get them something unique. I just got my boss some stemless martini glasses, that sit in little individual ice chiller cups when you set them down. Different, affordable, and cool. Find something that they might already have, but put a twist on it....hence, stemless glasses. They also make stemless wine glasses that might be an idea.
