The election takes place in January to decide who makes it into the Hall of Fame based on the baseball writers' decision, and they are officially inducted in July. A player can only be eligible for the Hall of Fame ballot five full seasons after they retired. For example, Cal Ripken Jr. retired after the 2001 season, and the 2006 season has concluded, so he is on the 2007 ballot because five seasons have passed since he retired (2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006)
