The novel Barometer Rising (1941) by the Canadian writer Hugh MacLennan is set in Halifax at the time of the explosion and includes a carefully researched description of its impact on the city.

During a visit to Nova Scotia last summer I learned that this event turned the City of Halifax on its ear for weeks. Imagine having all these bodies washing ashore in need of being identified, shipped back to their homes or buried quickly in local graves? No CSI, no DNA, etc... But the medical personnel in Halifax were much better prepared for such than anywhere else. Several years earlier many of the bodies from the Titanic were brought into Halifax. The medical personnel became pioneers in the science of identifying bodies and their work was the basis for later developments in this area. These techniques were already in place when the Halifax Explosion happened.

Well, not really a book, but I can give you a good explanation of what happened.
Basically, two ships, one going in and the other going out, scraped each other in the neck of the Halifax Harbor. It's shaped like an hourglass.
So the smaller ship, with 700 tons of TNT aboard, catches fire. The captain runs away without telling the firefighters about the TNT. After 20 minutes, roughly 9:07 AM, the whole damn thing exploded. Windows shattered 200 miles away. The surviviors of the initial blast got killed by the tidal wave that resulted. Buildings were flattened.
It was the most devastating man-made loss of life ever...
...until September 11 2001
