I don't think pity is good. Bad for the physiology of the pityer and unwelcomed by the pitied.

You're right, pity IS different from compassion. And like any emotion, it's only as "good" or "bad" as the one who emotes it. When the emotion of pity is used and it inhibits our response to life (e.g. "self-pity"), it can be considered bad. When our pity for antoher person's state motivates us to do something to alleviate their suffering, then it could be classified good because it spurs us to positive action.

Pity is compassion.

Many people comfuse compassion and empathy.

Compassion may be born of empathy, but compassion is not empathy. Compassion is pity.

My answer is: Pity is compassion, and compassion is good. It is the emotion that most motivates people to be charitable to those who *truly* need it.

Pity is bad because it stops a person from becoming stronger.
People who wallow in pity parties will never see their true strength and nor will they ever reach their true strength, and or know about it.
I hate pity for those reasons.

Emotions aren't in themselves good our bad. If you put your hand on an ice cube, your hand lets you know. The knowledge is helpful, but can you really say the sensation is good or bad? Same thing with pity. It's trying to tell you something. Examine the sensation and find out what it's trying to tell you.

It is good... by having pity for someone, you want to do something for them. At the very least it makes you appreciate your own life more.

what pity to compassion, is a catterpillar to a butterfly.
pity can be bad, if you didnt do anything about your fellowman's suffering.
it can only be good, once you take time to help relieve it.
thus your pity transforms into compassion.

actually, pity IS synonomous with compassion. compassion is good, therefore pity is good. to sincerely pity someone is to speak compassionately yet not neccesarily to demonstrate it.
