First you have to insist that the person smokes only outside, or you can never get rid of the smoke odor.

There is no point in using anything that masks the smell - you need to remove it or absorb it.

We just moved back into our house after renting it to someone who smoked. There is no quick or easy solution, but persistence will pay off. Remember that if the odor is still lingering there your furniture and curtains and carpets are re-absorbing it.

Use baking soda on the fabric of furniture and carpets frequently. Sprinkle it on the furniture. Let it sit for a while, or even overnight, and vacuum.

Wash or dry clean fabric curtains frequently. Clean all glass and mirrors frequently with vinegar and rinse.

Let your house air frequently. Don't use things such as incense, candles, etc. That is what our renter did and it actually just masks the odor and makes it more overwhelming and oppressive. You need to focus on absorbing the odor. Use small bowls of vinegar placed in unobtrusive but strategic positions about the house. Vinegar absorbs odors. Charcoal also abosrbs odors as you know. You can buy the boxes of baking soda packaged to use as odor absorber in refrigerators - place some of those around the house in unobtrusive locations.

Hotels, bus companies, taxi companies use a special ozone product to remove smoke odor. Talk to a professional about one of those. Here is one solution I found at the Bob Vila website .....

"Use the Vamoose 1808T Tobacco Odor Fabric Spray. Several Rental Car Agencies and Major Hotels are using it. It works by getting into the fabric and chemically converts the tar and nicotine into a non-volatile gaseous state. It smells strong for about an hour but after that...the odor is permanently gone. This stuff is amazing!! One company that sells it is called Hill Country Distribution in Austin Texas. You can contact them at sales@hillcountrydistribution.... or call them at (512) 784-4024. "

You may not be able to totally remove it for a while, but it will disappear -it has disappeared from our house.

These links have many good suggestions. I hope this helps.

Put the smokers outside.I smoke but I cant stand the smell so I go outside.I own the house it is mine and I still go out side if you don't smoke or have children then they should go out side.If I go to someone house Even if they smoke I still go outside. This is the only war to get rid of the smoke for good. They have candles that you burn that replaces the smell. The smoke is on the ceiling in the furniture, curtains all over it is very hard to get the smell gone. You will all most repaint the house has the ceiling turned brown yet,if so get the paint.Good luck because most people that smoke think they can anywhere they want.Put them in the yard or tell them to build them a room away from the living place like in the yard.

I'm a smoker and can't stand the smell of smoke in my house either. Make sure a window is always opened when the person is smoking. You can use Fabreze and spray it on your curtains, bedding, furniture etc...Also, try lighting candles. They make ones especially for smokers. You can usually find them at Wal mart. Try designating only one room for the smoker. You can buy a room difuser(air circular) and it will difuse the smell too. Hope this helps.

Of course it is best to not smoke at all, but that isn't what was asked here. Why all the preaching in stead of answering a simple question? If you have no answer, why start preaching? Here's a simple solution that does work. 1. Put a small spoon full of bakingsoda in your mouth, take a sip of water with that. 2. Wash / brush your teeth with the bakingsoda in your mouth 3. Brush for 2 min, don't forget to also brush your tongue and gums, also under your tongue! After brushing thouroughly rinse your mouth 4. Eat something, like an apple. 5 repeat if nessecary

It can take 3-4 months to get rid of a smell in a home.
First, get rid of the smoker if that's not possible, have them smoke outside!
Have your carpets, curtains, and upholstered furniture professionally cleaned.
Repaint the walls in your home.

Good luck.

Start by making the person smoke outside. Then get a steam cleaner and steam clean all of the furniture and the carpet. You might have to repaint the walls depending on how deep the smell is into everything.

Burn candles!!!! Candles eat the smoke in the air, and of course they smell good. Also, try using a fabric freshener on furniture and curtains, such as febreeze. If you like air freshener in an aerosol can, that works nice too (maybe 2 times or more a day) that depends on how much you want to use. But the candles work the best.

I used to smoke, and the only way to keep your house from smelling like cigarettes is to smoke outside. If someone is smoking inside your house, there is nothing that will completely eliminate that smell, and the tar from the cigarettes will also stain your walls.

Cigarette smoke usually gets absorbed by furniture, upholstry, carpet, and even the paint on your walls. Unless the smoker isn't going to be around anymore, there is really no way to actually eliminate that odor. But, fabric fresheners do help.
