I've heard of places you can pan for gold or dig for gems (diamonds & opals) in the Western US and am looking for places to go in the eastern US. Only thing I've found specifically is "Herkimer Diamonds" in New York state.
SO, I'm hoping some folks out there might know of other places I could find. THANKS!!!

Diamonds can be found at the Crater of Diamonds NP in Arkansas. N. Carolina is known for Emeralds and other beryls.
Gold is spread throughout the eastern US in the Carolinas, Georgia, eastern Tennessee, even in New Hampshire. Ohio, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Indiana also have glaciallly placed placer deposits. In fact, gold has been discovered in 49 US states.

There is gold all over the east coast, you just have to do your research to find out the best locations to pan. The first gold strike/rush in the United States was in North Carolina.

You probably could find gems anywhere most places have not been searched for gems because people think there is none there or the land is private and won't let you search there.

Herkimer's the only one I know of, and I've been all over the northeast and mid-Atlantic regions.
