Pictures are worth a thousand words. Each picture has a story behind it. Even if it is just a picture of you and a friend, it brings back a memory in your mind when you see it.
When describing the picture you tell, "Oh I remember this, it was at this place, at this time, with this person and it was so funny because later she did this and then we went here...."
And if they don't seem like a thousand words now, they will someday. Like when you are old and you say to your grandchild, "Oh I remember this picture, me and my friend went here and did this, oh yeah I was a rebel, I will tell you a few things we did together when were young, we were crazy..."
And if you don't think pictures are important still, think of if all of your pictures were burned in a fire, and you had none of someone who is gone. You would care then.
My mother got into Genealogy a few years ago and was in an internet forum that allowed people to trade info about names. Each room was titled a different last name so that you could possible look up family members.
My mom talked to a woman that happened to be doing a family tree for a man we were related to distantly, and the man had died and left the woman with all of the information. The woman sent a picture in an email later of a woman, man and baby to my mother.
The picture ended up being the only picture in existance that we know of that has my Great-great grandmother in it. Think of how much that picture is worth. More than words, I can tell you that.

As a teacher I believe a picture can be worth at least a thousand words. As a person who teaches about and was always interested in Helen Keller's empowering life story, I feel at least a thousand words should be used to describe things to a blind person. To describe the color orange or any image for that matter, one must delve into the other senses. For example, one might say of orange that it's a warm color, with a citrusy smell. It's laughter of a group of young children, and the texture of a pumpkin's skin, smooth with a few bumps. It could be so many things to the one explaining, but that person should also include the many thoughts of others when describing it.

When I see I choose to see when I read I follow thee. A painter uses colors, shapes, light and shadow to effect nuance and depth. A poet uses an arrangement of words in a pattern that is intended to invoke an image in the readers mind. Some poems consist of a single image while others are a collage. So, in answer to your question, is a picture worth 1000 words? Yes, but the picture can come from words as well as painting or other visual arts. I beleive a mental picture has a more profound personal affect than a visual picture. Unfortunately, literacy is required. Many people see a string of words as an obstruction to comprehension. To these souls, please do visually stimulate them. Let the literate revel in the raw power of words.

Good point. Orange would be hard to describe and would require a lot of imagination to do so! I think 1,000 words should be the limit, though. ;) To describe Orange to a blind person, I think we could say it's the flavor of the fruit of the same name, the warmth of a low fire, the smell of tangerines, the sound of bees humming. That's not all orange is, but we could tell Stevie Wonder that it's the sound of the G chord in the middle of the piano, and we might have a winner!
