I need help with making trading cards. What should I make them out of? Household things, but cardboard is too thick.Oh and what should I write with? My handwriting is messy and my printer is not working.

Use an old deck of playing cards...they usually have a plastic coating so are perfect for altered art. To make a "new" surface on which to design, spray paint them with a matte finish paint and then use rubber stamps and permanent pigment base ink to print words on them and glue/decoupage pictures or clip art to them. You will need to heat set the ink with a heat gun or a hair dryer for a few seconds

I would try poster board because it's thicker then your standard paper and thinner then cardboard...
Try stencils and a felt pen....
