The part of the answer that applies to all of them is that the resultant molecule has a lower energy level than the sum of its component atoms when isolated.
Ionic compounds form from atoms at opposite sides of the periodic table. The lonely electron in its own shell from sodium in column I is strongly motivated to move into the almost-full outer shell of the chlorine atom from column VII. That leaves a positively charged sodium ion and a negatively charged chlorine ion, which are strongly attracted to each other.
In a covalent bond, one or more of the outer electrons orbit both nucleii instead of just one. The result is again a lower energy state than the isolated atons. This draws neighboring atoms together until the positively-charged nucleii are close enough that their electrostatic repulsion would cost more energy than would be gained by drawing closer. This balance is why molecular bonds tend to stay at a fixed distance.

Well to put it simply to form elements like on are periodic table, See the sun is What creates what we know as an atom, the first to form where Hydrogen, then helium, After that you get everything up to Iron, Then the star goes super nova and the massive amount of heat and energy create all of the rest of the building blocks of life as we know it, This is fact no fiction, See it takes a lot of energy and heat to make atoms bond, Neutrons, protons and then electrons, See National graphics video of the universe It will tell you every thing you need to know about the birth of the universe, atoms, plants, etc....... Good luck and live well.

Atoms swing their electron partners, that's why. Some atoms have "underfilled" outer electron orbitals which can "take in more boarders", which are furnished by other atoms which have a few in their outer electron orbitals. The atoms are then "bound" by way of the outer orbital electrons that they share.
