My kids make decorations every year.
We took pine cones and spread glue on them and rolled them in glitter. Then made a loop out of yarn and hung them up to dry.
A couple of times I had the kids dip their hands in finger paint and make hand prints on stiff cardboard. When they were dry we cut them out and hung them on the tree (with name & year written on the back). It's really cute to see my 15 yr. old's handprint from when he was 3!
Craft stores sell foam pieces that have sticky backs to make ornaments, or white ceramic pieces to paint.
There are also little foam picture frames that the kids can make and insert a picture of themselves.
Last year we made salt dough ornaments. Check out the recipe I listed in the sources box.
Have fun, and I hope this helped!
Merry Christmas!

I made the most beautiful snowflakes with irridescent "pipe cleaners", the fuzzy wires, also called "Chenille stems" available at Michael's. I added clear pony beads to the rays and the tips with a little tacky glue The pony beads are a little smaller than the standard size. They are in the Kids Craft section of Michaels. Make 4 lengths of the fuzzy wire, cut each to the same length, 6". With the 4 wired together in the center, you get 8 spokes. Add a little "V" to the end of each wire with a piece that is 1 1/2 " long and more beads on the tips of the "V". They are very pretty.

We used to make red and green chain link garland. Cut out strips of green and red construction paper, and link them together with glue. We used to put them on the tree when we were done.
I also made a construction paper deer - my dad still has it and puts it out every year, even though it is probably 20+ years old now. We cut out a brown shape...like a deers head and neck....2 pieces. We stuck a stick inbetween the two pieces, and glued it together like that. Then we decorated the deer...with eyes, a red nose, reins, etc. using glue and glitter, markers, felt.

My family made an Advent chain. Make strips of paper about 2" wide by 6-8" long (white is best)...have enough to do one for each day, for today through christmas. Number them (we used the date, but you could do # of days left), and let the kids draw christmas-related pictures on each strip. Link them all together in order to make a paper chain, and hang/drape somewhere obvious. Each day one of the kids can rip off the bottom link. They love it.
You should also check with a local fabric store - they usually have all sorts of kits right now, for making your own ornaments, suncatchers, placemats, etc - all designed for kids in mind.

My step mom made cookies in different shapes she used a straw to make the hole before the cookies were baked. They looked nice on the tree. You can make decorations with colorfull beads string them in lengths of 6 or 7 inches and drape them over the branches.

poke a hole in the bottom of it for santa and a hole in the middle for a reindeer
and get out all of the eggyolk and wash it out with water
get cotton, red and brown construction paper or red and brown clothh and some wiggle eyes
( you can buy them from your local craft store like micheal's)
measure out how long you need to wrap it around the egg
and create
your children will love this
-------------------------------------------------
also get some clear ornaments, open the top and add paint,- use metallic colors they look great- inside of them to create your own ornament.

i go to oriental trading online. you can pick different packages of ornaments and all sorts of stuff to make with the kids. we do it every year so that our tree is completely home-made by our family. They have things for all ages and they are not expensive at all. In fact they ship in lits so what i do is make one for us and then i give the rest away as gifts for family, teachers or friends.

if possible get some lights and hang it on the walls for brightness! cut out some snowflakes, super simple and easy. you could also get styrofoam balls and cover them in colorful glitter of your choice. (red, green, blue, etc.) Search up craft websites for ideas! Good luck & Merry Christmas.

we make styrofoam ball ornaments. spray paint them gold or silver, red or green. then take sequins, ribbons, any decorations you like and either glue them on or use sequin pins to stick them on with beads. very creative, lots of fun, and cheap. i buy clearance beads, etc all year and then turn the kids loose with their creativity. they love it.
