It's much more powerful, has HD output, uses blu-ray disc technology (the next generation DVD), it uses a new tilt mechanism in the controller which allows you to just move it to control your gaming, it has a built in hard drive, it has a built in network card (to connect to the internet) and it cost more.

Free (supposedly) online support
Built in blu-ray drive
Semi-motion sensing controller
About 450$ (if the PS2 is still selling at 150$)
