Doesn't make much sense, but I'm looking for an Irish/Scottish sounding song that I heard on a bluegrass radio station once. Something about a mother telling her son some story that was "To teach him and to chasten him as well". And it involved a ring of stones... or something. Sorry I can't give more info...

Could this be the song you are looling for it is called Mallon's Bridge and was written by Michael Hough of Mustard's Retreat. It is a Granpa who is telling the story rather than a mother but it has all the other elements you list.

"Now, there's a tale I'm after singing
that my Grandpa used to tell
He said 'twas to enlighten me
and chasten me as well."

"but just across the river,
there's a ring of standing stones
and there are buried secrets
older far than human bones."

bill Monroe is a sturdy commence. he's seen the "father" of bluegrass. Earl Scruggs is substantial for Banjo and checklist Watson for guitar. For previous time singing i could elect the Carter kinfolk. For a greater recent sound (AK & Union station form) attempt New Grass Revival, Seldom Scene, The Kentucky Colonels, and The Dillards.. The Library of Congress has a The Library Of Congress Archive of people lifestyle: Anglo-American Ballads that's what bluegrass is derived from. that's attainable on Amazon.
