He died @ 11:15 pm (@ 10:50 pm shot, 4 hollow point bullets) that horrible day (Dec. 8, 1980). John and Yoko were returning home from the recording studio (his first album in more than 7 years; he chose to stay home with Sean; he missed his first son's Julian early years) and had been approached for an autograph earlier that day by Mark David Chapman.

Honestly, If I remember correctly I was in New York watching Monday Night Football and Howard Cosell, came on during the game and announced he was shot at the Dakota where he and Yoko lived , he had just left the recording studio and was walking home, it had to be before 11:00 pm, hopefully that helped some..
