litres is the metic unit of measure.
one litre is about 61 cu in
5.0 l = 300 cu in etc
fast cars can have low displacements depending on weight and mods
a 2.0 l can have more hp than a 5.0 l eg.

There is nothing called best letter because more you spend and more you can afford for gas the more liters you can get. I would say if you are looking for good speed 3.0 to 3.5 would be nice and fast enough... in car i think the fastest liter you can get it 8 liters with a v16 engine

The size of the engine (or displacement) is measured in volume units (cubic centimeters -cc- or liters -where one liter equals 1000 cubic centimeters or cc). As you may know the car engine is basically a set of cylinders (can be 3-4-5-6-8-10-12 or 16 -like in the Bugatti Veyron) that are the combustion chambers that produce the power used to propel your vehicle. The cycle of combustion consist in a four steps process (that’s why a car engine is named a 4 strokes engine): intake, compression, power -or explosion- and exhaust. Inside each the cylinders there is one piston that moves up and down depending on which step of the cycle the piston is. The volume of the cylinder is measured from the top of the piston at the lower position (intake step) to the top of the cylinder (it is the “free” space inside the cylinder). So, the displacement is the amount of combustion mix (that fits inside the combustion chamber (the cylinder) when the intake step is at its maximum. As I said at the beginning, this amount is measured in volume units...so, a car with an engine of 4 cylinders with 2 liters of displacement means that its engine has 4 cylinders of each 500 cubic centimeters or half a liter of combustion chamber capacity.

litre is the metric opposite of cubic inches or CID my jeep has a 5.9L in it which converts to 360 CID. now racing wise nothing beats displacement for drag racing but in F1 racing rpm's are needed more. depending on racing sanctions or classes, they are litre limited, especially in Indy Car or Indy Car Lights.....
