Islam made many contributions to world culture, especially:
Architecture: the Taj Mahal
Literature: the poetry of Rumi.
Persian music was a big influence on Indian music.
Science: many advances in chemistry and astronomy - many star names are arabic; Ibn al-Haitham was first to prove that vision comes from light entering the eye, rather than anything leaving the eye and hitting an object.
You can blame them for algebra as well.
There are other achievements if you look, but sadly with modern day conflicts it's easy to fall into the trap of only thinking bad things about the "other side". Thanks for trying to look deeper than the headlines.

Don't know about links, but I'll give you what I've got-------------
Islam is the reason we are as far advanced as we are in scientific knowledge, literature, architecture, and mathematics.
After the fall of Rome, Classical knowledge, that of the Greeks and all the early middle Eastern societies, was lost. The barbarian tribes that sacked Rome were native to present day France, Germany, and Central Europe. They totally lacked vision which included the Humanities and Sciences of today.
Here and there, where Christianity had penetrated in those first four centuries of the Present Era, there were tiny outposts where some isolated groups tried to preserve knowledge. These were the monasteries, where scribes laboriously copied texts because they believed that they might be comprehended again sometime in their future.
In contrast, the Moslems, in all these areas of knowledge, not only had cultural possession of knowledge by rote, they also advanced knowledge-------thinkers in early Islam were highly respected and admired. (Mohammed himself was what we would call today a philosopher).
The society of Europe and Western Asia was no match for the power of Islam where it could reach, in Spain and Turkey. The Moors in Spain, in particular, were the reason that Spain and it's neighbor Portugal were far in advance of the rest of Europe in exploring and exploiting new lands.
As present day civilization is of European or West Asian roots, the value of Islam in preserving knowledge simply can't be overstated.

Get the DVD or VHS "Islam: Empire of Faith" produced by PBS from your library, or Netflix it. There's a ton of info in it.
One thing Islamic culture did was to preserve Greek philosophical thought while it was largely lost in the West during the early Middle Ages. Islamic philosophers and theologians developed Greek philosophy, medicine, and other intellectual disciplines even further than the Greeks.
After the Crusades, Westerner's brought Greek texts and writings by Islamic intellectuals back home. This eventually would influence late Medieval theologians and helped prepare the West for the Renaissance.

Islam was the center of learning and discovery while Europe was in so called Dark ages (about a millenia). Moslems created "Algebra" (arabic word), alchemy (Chemistry's predecessor), advanced astronomy, medicine, mathematics, architecture, philosophy and literature.
