16Mb (Megabit not Megabyte) is twice the maximum speed offered by BT but unless you live very close to a 16Mb enabled telephone exchange (ask but it probably is only in central London) you will not get that speed. That's why the companies always say "Up to ?Mb"

BT have been around donkey's years and are broadly speaking quite reliable but (personal experience here) their customer support is not good. Sky are quite new to the ISP game and teething problems might be an issue although they did take over a more experienced ISP (Plusnet, I think [edit] Correction, it was Easynet) to run their internet business. I have no idea what their customer support is like.

Not personally directed at you (because even some ISPs get this wrong) but to nitpick, the abbreviation for megabit is Mb (lower case b) while the abbreviation for Megabyte is MB. The difference? A megabit is one eighth of a megabyte. More so, megabit is typically a declaration of transfer speed (like an internet connection) while megabyte is a statement of storage capacity (like the size of a memory card).

I couldn't tell you which is better, but if sky is offering free broadband with the package, and BT charge....

I wouldn't go with either, Tiscali gives 8MB plus free UK local a national phone calls for a mere £22, I've had no bother with them over the last two years.
