That actually happened to me once when I maybe 12 or 13. I forget the title of the book. It was a fantasy story about some kid who's Mother gives him a strange blue stone. He sets it in the handle of a gardening implement (a trine...whatever that is). He lives with his Father, who finds it exceedingly difficult to show his son any affection. For whatever reason, the kid (well not really a kid, but a young guy anyhow) decides to go off on this quest. His Dad (a blacksmith) turns the trine into a dagger. It still has the blue rock in the handle. From that point on, it is referred to as "the dagger that was a trine." Anyway, the rock has magical qualities and the guy uses the dagger to kill a giant land slug that secretes a highly corrosive slime. Other stuff happens, but that's the main plotline.
Harry Potter and a series of kids' books called "The Edge Chronicles" are the only books I've recently read that can hold my attention like that.

Actually, that's happened to me a million times.
Choosing a favorite book would be like choosing a favorite song or a favorite food, or even a favorite movie. There's so much good stuff out there, that you can only say which is it that you like the most at this exact moment in time.

I would highly reccommend reading the Harry Potter series. It is absolutely amazing no matter what anyone else says. Also, The Prophecy of the Stones. It is a wonderful novel.
