Look at how American society has changed in the past 50 years alone. At first racism was accepted, blacks and non-whites were segregated and it was OK. Now racism is "not-accepted" even though it is still present in today's society. It's all a matter of the cultural ideals in American Society.
If you ask me, its very hypocritical. Not all, but a lot of black people use the N-word like its the word "the." Yet if anyone else who isn't black so much as says it in public its offensive! The same people you see on TV talking about an "end to racism" or "the progress we've made to ending racism" do just that. Talk talk talk. No one is willing to step over racial boundaries and make a change.
Especially since it's such a delicate taboo topic nowadays. A man who looks muslim or "middle-eastern" can't pass through airport lines without being given a second glance at the least! Whether its a matter of defense or a private animocity fueled by racism, unfortunately, that's just the way our society has adapted to be.
So its all a matter of society- the PEOPLE. What we REALLY do as opposed to what we TALK about doing, what we believe (and IF we are racist, try to justify it ok to be racist ourselves or have a racist mindset) and what is culturally accepted.
Obviously if people are upset that there's a black person on/in Laguna Beach, unless that person is causing problems, and if its specifically racially motivated, then thats racist, and that's wrong. These are just my opinions, it doesn't make them right, and it doesn't make them wrong.Personally, i believe if racism is still around, it doesn't matter if its gotten "worse" or "better." Any racism at all is still unacceptable.

I feel that racism has got worse because of 9/11. Whites in general feel threatened. As I have said many times before Whites are very very xenophobic and are generally vary of anything that is different, not just Black. It seems that White people will be generally tolerant (although never accepting) of others, but if something happens which disturbs their sense of security in the world, then there tends to be a backlash against any different culture and people. It also has to do with the preconception in which, Whites feel more superior to any other race, which promotes racism and racist behavior. People have to realize that we live in a pyramid system, where it is Whites on top, Asians in the middle and Blacks down the bottom. Until everyone makes an effort to change this, there will always be racism, but then no one will try to change the system, because everyone is benefiting, from it, especially White people, in terms of economics and controlling for whom what and how. It is only Black people that are getting a raw deal, but then they must realize that they need to fight and not sell each other out, if they are to succeed in this society and benefit from it.

I don't think it's getting worse. I think it's just gets more media attention. Not to mention that the web is a place for people to act like jerks anonymously. Have you ever noticed really ignorant questions posted by people in answers that are obviously posted by a moron that wants to get a rise out of others. For example, a young girl talking about getting an abortion in the trying to concieve section. That is obviously someone misrepresenting themselves to get a rise out of the community members. Things like that happen all the time. Some people just like to irriate others... blogs, message boards, etc. are just the place for them to do it. I wouldn't take anything posted on a message board as how a person truly feels.
Looking at my daughter and her friends, compared to how it was when I grew up, there isn't any racism present. As the generations grow, I think we will continue to see less racism. It's just not present in the younger generations.

It really never gets worse or better. Before the 80's it was more obvious, but now racism is still there, its just more institutionalized and concealed in society. Some people are trying to pretend its not there, so when something like the Kramer situation happens, or when other people act racist, it seems like things are getting worse.

When you force this concept of equal oppurtunity, diversity, racial equality, etc you are going to have a lot of resentment against the antagonist.
And, yes, it's getting worse.

Don't know. Have heard that the government is thinking about segregating students again. That sure sounds like we're going backwards.
