he is a runner, u know that, so start the converstion by asking him about how he got interested in running, what he likes about it, how long he has done it, etc. the conversation will develop from there. its always good to ask him about where he is from, his family, etc. too.
That shows u are truly interested in him.

well I'd think the first step is find out his interests. you may have some of the same ,and then you can talk about those to start with

ask him what he does in his spare time, use open ended questions, not yes and no questions. Most shy guys will not shut up once you get them going. It just takes them longer to get rolling.
