Reverb is a complex form of delay. It is smooth with very few distinct repeats, unless you're playing with digital and have access to predelay and other parameters, then you can get all kinds of wild sounds. Think of the sound you get when you clap your hands in an underground parking garage or a very large sports arena. Used tastefully, reverb adds warmth and dimension to many instruments, especially vocals. Used in excess, it can give you a cheap karaoke sound. Think of effects like makeup on a woman, you don't want it to be obvious, but when you take it away, things seem awfully plain. It makes your guitar sound like you are in a big room.

Its essentially a metal box that has rows of coil springs stretched inside of it that attach to peizoelectric transducers that feed back into the pre-amp stage of the amplifier. The vibrations of the speaker excite the springs and the vibes make the tranducers create a signal that the pre-amp send into the eq, and final amplifier stage.

It echoes the last notes you played. They get louder and then fade out.
