Mine did that too! Turns out, the hard drive on my ol' desktop was just too darn full for defrag to run though it tried and tried and tried...I had to interrupt the defrag (cancel through Task Manager or reboot) and not try again and give up. I found out in my case if I couldn't get rid of enough files to make room for a defrag it'd never work!

Defrag is not running in normal mode because one of two things or both:

try defragging in safe mode
make sure your HDD isn't too full maybe move some data to another storage device...
