There are a list of items that need to be serviced and are suggested by Honda Motor Co. to be performed at 30k mile mark.

They are not covered under most warranties.

My advice to you is to look in your owner's manual and find out exactly what procedures are recommended. Usually Engine Coolant Flush, Brake Fluid Flush, and a few other things in adition to the motor oil. Have a local shop that you trust do the work.(If you can find one). Otherwise, yes $500 at the dealer is pretty standard.

Usually it is not necessary to have this work done at the dealership. However, if you have some additional warranty through your dealer, it may void it if someone else does the maintenance. Check into this as well.

I believe your car will have to have the timing belt changed when you reach 60k, so get ready for that. This is the most expensive maintenance requirement. The good news is that the new Honda's will not have to have the timing belt changed.

Good Luck.

Is the Accord being sold by a private seller or a dealership? A '03 Accord EX coupe, in good condition, with 155k has a current market value of $4,300 from a private seller and $5,600 from a dealership. A hundred or so more if it has a V6. So if this is from a dealership they are asking a reasonable price. If you can get them to come down to $5,600, or below, it would be a very fair deal for both parties.

Go through the list of what they do and change the easy stuff yourself (sparkplugs, etc), and the stuff you aren't comfortable doing, have them do it. If you look at the list, they have stupid things like changing the windshield washer fluid - you don't need to pay them to do that.
It'll save some money at least.
I do nearly all the work on my car so my maintenance costs are not even a fraction of what Honda charges. You should try it, you get more satisfaction saving so much money, and knowing the work was actually done.

That's not OK... The Honda certified guy who said it is only says that because he's the one getting paid.

Besides, I didn't know Hondas or Toyotas needed maintenance. They're foreign vehicles and I didn't think foreign cars had problems?

Sorry, I guess I'm a little bitter. The 30k checkup should only cost that much if you're doing all the things that certified Honda guy above my answer suggests. I work at an American dealership and our 30k checkup runs $259 and that's if you don't use a coupon or something to make it cheaper. $500 is outrageous.

On these services, you're mostly paying for labor. You really should consider an independent repair place for things like that: they tend to have lower overhead and charge less labor.

There are very few maintenance parts on your car at this mileage, so it's basically fluid changes and an inspection.

It sounds a bit high to me... I would refer to your "owners manual" find the 30K service, then sign onto Alldata (online service for vehilce info) pay the fee for your vehicle. You then can find what labor times for this service. And if you choose to do the repair yourself you have the technical info to help you through it... minus doing some of the fluid flushing procedure that requires special equipment. Or you can have a shop or dealer do it and you know before had what it should cost you.

The 60k service at my dealership is $399.95 and then additional $105 to replace the air conditioning/heppa filters that your accord is equiped with.

Very standard for most Honda dealers

It's typical. If you're still under warranty definitely have the dealership perform all maintenance. Aren't Honda's great?!!
