When you put an automatic transmission in D you are telling it to act fully automatically. That is, the transmission will choose whichever gear it feels is best. This is what you should do for MOST driving.

However there are times such as when you are in stop and go traffic, going down a long, steep hill, or if perhaps you need extra pulling power for some reason where you will want to limit the transmission to a lower top end gear. That is where D3, D2 and D1 come in. Selecting D3 means the transmission will not go higher than 3rd gear. D2 stops it at second, etc. I hope this helps.

It's how you downshift an automatic transmission. Normally the transmission does all that for you, but there's one case I can think of where you need to tell it to downshift. When you're descending a looooong hill, like you find in mountain country.

if you use your brakes for that, you will overheat the brakes and they'll fade (stop working). Which is a serious problem on a steep hill!

However, if you downshift your transmission, you can use "engine braking" to slow you down, which the engine can do all day no trouble.

So when you descend a steep, long hill, you should downshift, so most if not all of the braking is done by the engine and not the brakes. Use the brakes gently and rarely, so you keep them in reserve for in case you suddenly need them.
