501(c)(3) is a section of the IRS tax code that explains what is considered to be a non-profit corporation. In order to claim that status, a rather lengthy application needs to be filed with the IRS, explaining the tax exempt purpose of the organization. Since your mom is working through a church, there should be some sort of paperwork on file at the church office showing tax exempt status. If this is a Roman Catholic church, the Archdiocese should have provided paperwork to the business office at the local parish.
