Try www.dripinvestor.com or www.moneypaper.com. They will also help you or the recipient take the share and reinvest the dividiends and add more money to it.
If you're going to do this for a number of people, you can also buy a few shares of one stock, and then write the broker and ask him to split it up and send a share to each person. For minors, you should give it to them with a parent's name on it, too, so that the parent can cash it out if necessary: otherwise it's a problem. Ask the broker how to do this.
Otherwise, the cheapest way is to find one of the cheap brokerages and just pay the $9.95 fee or whatever it is.

Oneshare is nice but you will see they tack on a lot in commissions and they stick you with the highest market price on the order.
An alternative is Sharebuilder.com
It's not only a great online brokerage for beginners, but they have a gift package that helps the recipient get started with their own stock:

Good luck!

Penny stocks are loosely categorized companies with share prices of below $5 and with market caps of under $200 million. They are sometimes referred to as "the slot machines of the equity market" because of the money involved. There may be a good place for penny stocks in the portfolio of an experienced, advanced investor, however, if you follow this guide you will learn the most efficient strategies https://tr.im/4ed13
