Maybe you can always add "and one person said it was The Moody Blues." Remember, the answers are going to be slanted by the age of the people voting - younger people will be more contemporary....older rockers like me will lean to more classic rock groups from the past.

The greatest rock bands never get wildly popular. I'm not sure how wide your definition of "rock" is, but Five Iron Frenzy would definitely be one of the all-time greats. Brave Saint Saturn is also awesome, though amazingly obscure. Showbread is freakin' amazing, though they play some harder stuff...
So to appease the masses and mention a band they've actually heard of, I'll nominate Queen as the greatest rock band of all time (simply because the very best bands would never be chosen).
And if I hear one person claim Fall Out Boy is the best band of all time, I may have to throttle them... ;-)

It has to be LED ZEPPELIN definatly considering popularity, cult fan following, innovative music, greatest rock singles, great guitar riffs/solos, live performances, the music, the energy, it was on top of many polls by many music magazine websites whatever ....so unquestionably its

Tastes change very quickly. So many great bands are now forgoten. I would choose U2 because they have provided great rock music over such along period of timee and The Rolling Stones do seem finally to have lost a little of their perpetual magic
