Agree with the other poster that water is best.
Drink a glass of water between each drink and then more before going to bed with Advil or Tylenol and keep some next to the bed.
Best yet, don't get that hangover at all. Make sure you eat food prior to having something to drink, and to pace yourself.
Don't drink coffee, it helps to dehydrate your body.
Your liver also produces acetaldehyde (a carcinogenic toxin) when breaking down the alcohol you have consumed. This helps to make you feel like **** after a bender.
Age makes up a difference too, as the body rebounds much more rapidly when young because the body's ability to break down alcohol slows with age.
Genetics too, plays a factor as some people have less of an enzyme called ADH which can contribute to extent of the hangover the next day.
Another item for consideration is the color of the alcohol. Darker alcohols contain more congeners and these seem to intensify the effect of a hangover.
Some experts recommend eating easily digestible vitamin source foods when drinking water the next day, such as a banana to help you recover.

About an hour before you are ready to go home or stop drinking, start slamming the water and/or sports drink. It helps to replenish the electrolites lost during drinking. Notice how you pee a lot when you drink? That is your body filtering the alcohol. You need to replace that water. Hangovers are mostly made up of dehydration. Every time I drink, I bring water with me and a bottle of gatorade. I make sure I keep drinking the water all night and then finish it up with gatorade. It almost always helps. I say almost always because there has been one time where I drank so much that nothing helped and I was sick for two days. I won't do that again.

Well the obvious way to prevent a hang over is don't drink! However, I'm reasonably certain that is not what you meant.
So here goes my "serious" advice. Control you drinking. That is only 1 or 2 drinks per hour. Drink water (non-caffeinated, no alcoholic beverages) between drinks. Eat while drinking.
Hangovers are caused by multiple factors. The main one is alcohol toxicity. At high doses alcohol is a poison, so if you drink a lot you are going to feel bad. Dehydration and hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) also contribute.

Ummm, lemme see. This is a tough one.
To prevent and avoid hangovers I think the answer would be:
DON'T drink too much in the first place.

Drink water inbetween each drink. Keep Hydrated, have them put a lime in the cocktail glass so it looks like a gin/tonic. That way you won't loose your street cred.
