Get an epiphone SG special players pack. For less than $200 you get a decent guitar, a fair amp, an instructional DVD, tuner, cable, and strap.

Well, do you prefer acoustic or electric music?

If you plan to play alone, the acoustic is a great place to start. You'll be much more satisfied with solo performance/practicing, but if you have friends who play instruments (and assuming you'd enjoy making music with them) then you will want to be heard with them; that'll call for an electric.

Also, consider your price range. Cheap electric guitars can be fine, and some are actually better than expensive ones.

However, cheap acoustics can inhibit your learning, with high action, thikc strings and less-than satisfactory tone.

I think only you can answer this....but when you think of yourself creating music, is it electric or acoustic?

I would get an acoustic to start. I have both...electrics are easier to fret...but harder to make sound good.

Acoustics are great because you can play them anywhere (outside, friend's house without lugging around an amp).

Yamaha makes a good acoustic but there are tons of good brands. My ultimate recommendation would be to go with someone who is experienced at guitar and let them pick it out for you. It is very hard to tell you a good guitar without playing it.

But get an acoustic...

Personally, I started on an acoustic, and when I got an electric 2 years later, I found it even easier to play. On an acoustic, I think its harder to get things right, like if you don't hold the note firmly enough, it just "buzzes" or doesn't come out at all. Once I switched over, it was so much easier to play. So its sort of like, acoustic will be harder to learn, but you'll learn correctly. Starting out on electric means you would be able to "half a$$" certain techniques, but it is easier to play. Really depends on how far you're trying to go I guess.

Sort of like how in baseball, batters will swing heavy bats before they go in to swing for real, so it feels lighter and they can swing faster.

Also, if you're looking to get a generic brand for cheap, generally acoustics are cheaper. You also wouldn't need to get an amp.

start with an acoustic, getting an electric can be expensive not to mention with an electric you'll need and amp. You could get a starter electric gig pack, but I would suggest an acoustic

for pure ease of playing, tuning and practicing i would suggest a nylon stringed acoustic guitar. Plus it's a little quieter when you first start off...don't be scared to get an electric, most of the time the neck and strings are easier to play...but do by something you like, it will help you to keep interest.

good luck and keep rocking!
