David Ross was the original in the one-off appearance in series 2 but Robert Llewellyen played Kryten from Series 3 , but in series 5 episode 2 (The Inquistor) there was a cameo apperance of a 3rd Kryton after he a lister were "erased" SO MY ANSWER IS 3

I think that Rimmer is better than Ace Rimmer since he's his own person whereas Ace Rimmer is a compilation of the prior Ace Rimmers and Rimmer. However I would much rather be stranded in space with Ace Rimmer as Rimmer would end up causing me to do one of the tow of us harm.
