My 11 year old son and I will be taking a road trip from Chicago to Burleson, Texas (sister is moving and I'm driving her truck so she can drive the U-Haul).

I don't know what route we will be taking yet, but does anyone have any great places along the way that we should stop and see? The route may just depend on the things we want to see.

I'm also interested to know what there is around the Dallas/Fort Worth area. We're not going to have a ton of money to blow in the cities and I like to spend time with my son. Anything within 4 hours of the Fort Worth area that's a must see?

Although we love museums and visiting strange cities for a day, natural attractions are our favorites.

Thanks!

I know it's long. We're no strangers to long car rides, we once drove from Chicago to Rapid CIty South Dakota and back in 3 days...we drove over 2000 miles that weekend. My son and I are roadtrip buddies. We have tons of games that we play. We just have never gone towards Texas before. We always seem to go north, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan, South Dakota. We have driven to Memphis, but not much farther south.

Thanks for the help!

BTW great name....my son's name is Nick.

There is a large drive through wildlife area to the north of Fort Worth with exotics and there are some things with dino fossiles in the north side of fw (area is called fossil creek)

I believe Fort worth zoo is reduced price on Wed., there is a low price rodeo every Friday and sat. in the stockyard, and wandering through and looking at the cattle drive is free, the art museums are low price or free unless you go to the special shows (the Kimbell is esp. good which is between a western art museum and modern art museum), same area is the cowgirl museum, science museum and Will Rogers col. that can be fairly cheap(science is a bit higher priced). downtown is real nice esp at night, but not much there for kids, try a meal at Billy Miners where the locals go. Of this list, for must see, i would go for the stock yards. There are big trains, shopping, the worlds largest honky tonk (kids allowed), historical experts wandering around dressed as cowboy who will explain the old west to anybody who wants to know, tex/mex food, BBQ, catfish, long horn cows up close and personal, and a staging of the last wild west shoot out every Sat for free. The area does get a bit more adult after 10pm and I usually go to downtown by that time, as security is quite tight there during the evening. Come have fun.

p.s. this is all inside Fort Worth city but there is a lot of other stuff in Arlington and Dallas

Hey sounds fun! I live ten minutes from DFW airport so I might be able to help. DFW is great for having things to do, believe it or not, although coming from Chicago (which i adore) you may be struggling to find things to do, that arent overpriced. The Fort Worth Stockyards are always worth a trip (a bit smelly but still educational). We have the Sixth Floor Museum in Dallas where JFK was shot and is always profound. If you like natural attractions, you would be better off going to the hillcountry near Austin (about 4hours but well worth it).Its beautiful and has lots of local charm. Plus Austin is amazing..their slogan is "keep austin weird" whats not to love. San Antonio is a good bet as well, though its an hour farther from austin. the riverwalk is so much fun.

Good luck! i know im not too much help but as a girl, i only know about good shopping and expensive attractions haha. I tried!

Have fun

Let me be the first to warn you, Texas is a long drive with not a lot to see off the highway but the towns and citys are very nice.
With that said, do you know how to play the "ABC Game"?
It just depends on what you like to see. There are nice parks, and a Zoo in the Dallas/Ft Worth area.
Lots of bars and clubs on Greenville (Dallas) with good prices on drinks and lots of people.
You can try these web sites for some more info

Have a fun & safe trip.

Wow...citadel well worth is without doubt certainly one of the least racist places i will think of of actual. the individuals there (the interior sight human beings) are oftentimes heat and delightful. Dallas human beings (i'm from and residing in Dallas with the help of how) are lots less warm and ruder. regrettably for you, a lot of human beings have come to Texas from different states and countries, because of fact the overdue Nineteen Eighties and actual ruined the completed ecosystem right here. yet citadel well worth might desire to be severe high quality... See the Stockyards, the Bass corridor, the museums, the zoo and are available on over to Dallas for the Dallas worldwide Aquarium and the Latino Cultural center.
