Ive always wondered what set off the alarm in stores when you walk out?

I dont get it sometimes when u buy things and u walk out the alarm goes off, it cant be the bar code thats for prices, i always feel embarrassed when i buy something and walk out and the alram goes off, but ive always wondered what set it off

Those security devices are sometimes embedded into the merchandise you buy in such a way that it is difficult for store clerks to detect or remove them - especially in DVDs or computer software. You could buy a movie at a video store, then get waved through but set off the detector in the next store you shop in. Also sometimes they can be sewn into odd places in clothing.
Once I set off the detectors in Walmart, and they waved me through, but when I got home I discovered I had picked up an entire bag of those stupid detectors when I picked up my bags at the register. Of course I returned them a few days later, because I was afraid someone would get in trouble.

The stores have "mini towers" on each side of the exit. These are actually radio frequency receivers. The stores attach small radio transmitters (tags) to high priced merchandise. If the tag is not deactivated...and comes within a few feet of the "tower" (receiver)...an alarm goes off.

Actually, i think it is from the barcode on the tag, or atleast something on the tag. Me and my friends also take off a tag and put it in some randome persons bag and then it goes off and they have to search em and stuff, Fun Stuff....

There is a sensor inside the package that the sales clerk has neglected to deactivate, therefore it will go off when you reach the door.

I thought it was because those things on the way out the door were metal detectors and the little tag things had metal in them..

if you buy certain electronic items, they have electronic codes, that will set off the alarm.
