The South is largely Conservative--loathe to accept handouts, anxious to serve a worthy cause, with an almost Bushido-esque code of Ethics and Behavior that is reflected currently in the platform of the GOP.

The old Solid South was Democrat: Al Gore Sr voted AGAINST the 64 Civil Rights Act every chance he got. If not for the GOP, that legislation would never have survived! the Dem's have changed so much, the South was left by the Party, not the other way round.

I think that it represents the part of the country that does not want much goverment involved in its life. Small town, independent thinking families. It represents the culture that practices personal responsiblity.
