Get a nice electronic tuner. Now. Learning the guitar on an out-of-tune instrument is so frustrating, that I would bet that is why 95% of people quit before they know how to play. I would also suggest a book published by Mel Bay; virtually any of them are good.
Go to a music store, by the nicest tuner you can afford, and get an instrucional method book in a style (or subject) that interests you.
Also, you're fingers WILL hurt at first. Just stay with it, and don't stop when your fingers are sore (bleeding is another issue - you just got your guitar - don't ruin it!) otherwise, you'll take longer to build up those nice callouses we guitarists are so proud of.
Stay with it - and GET A TUNER!!

Being a guitar player for 10 years, first, decide what kind of music you want to learn to play. Start with basic genres. Find yourself a teacher for 30 days, practice everyday. If you still have it in you to want to learn guitar, begin teaching yourself to learn tablature. Find a DIFFERENT teacher than the first and try to take classes once a week. Find some beginner books and teach yourself from those. Once you've done all these things begin to learn current songs on your guitar. Once you get to this stage, find a peer who also plays guitar to practice with as well. Trust me you'll learn something. :)

If you are really interested in learning to play the guitar, then you need to purchase the type of guitar that fits you and your personality, get a cd or book to help get you started and PLEASE take LESSONS with a person who loves to teach and play different styles of guitars. In order to stay interested you need to keep it up and don't give up. Playing a guitar is easy, if you enjoy doing so. Good Luck! Back Stage Music in Oklahoma

My advice to you is take lessons and learn to read music, not just Tab. Be patient, it won't come to you overnight. Or over the course of a year for that matter.

Go to a website like 911tabs.com and find a song you really like, and try to play it.
