1: Re-pot your household plants using sterile, new soil. Gnats may be laying eggs in potted plants throughout your home or office.

2: Since indoor plants can be such a breeding ground for gnats, make sure you don’t over-water them. Allow the soil to dry between watering. Gnats thrive in a warm, moist environment.

3: The other big culprit could your drains. To get rid of the pests, pour a little bit of vegetable oil around and down the drain. By doing this, you’re coating the bugs so they can’t breed anymore. Some people use bleach but experts say that can experts say that can damage your metal pipes.

4: Many self-professed “gnat experts” recommend a homemade concoction to get rid of them. Use one tablespoon of apple cider vinegar, fruit juice or wine and add that to a small bowl of water and put the bowl or jar near potted plants.

5: Any produce you leave out is just a magnet for the gnats. Be sure to store all fruits and vegetables you’re not using in the refrigerator.

6: Get gnats under control quickly. Gnats can live for about four months and a female can produce as many as 300 eggs during her short lifespan.

Mix 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1 tablespoon Dawn dish detergent, pour into a shallow dish or bowl, and leave in an area where the gnats are swarming. The gnats will be attracted to this and drown in it.

I think what I used was vinegar. You put a jar with vinegar in it out and the gnats will be attracted to it and drown.
