Try making 2 different phonecalls on 2 phones on the same line using a splitter...It wont work right? Well thats the same thing for dial up, you cannot go out twice on the same line.

Nope, only one computer at a time on a dial up line. However, you can get a router that will let you share a single dial up connection between two computers at the same time. Technically, only one machine will use the line, but the router acts as a traffic cop to sent the data to the right machines.

Some people are getting this confused with DSL.
With dialup, no, only one computer can go on at once.
What you can do is buy an ethernet card (or two), and if you have XP, use Internet Connection Sharing so that both computers can use the dialup connection over one PC.
If it's just between two PCs, you can use a CROSSOVER ethernet cable (it's different from regular cat-5) to connect the two directly, or a hub or switch for more than two.

For anything else (including XP)

With Dialup no.
1. Splitters need to be deployed at both sides at the service provider Central office, as well as at your site.
2. Splitters are for DSL to separate the DSL frequency range from the Traditional phone.
3. Dialup modems operate the Phone freqency range anyhow, so it would be a problem.
You can use ISDN BRI if you need to dialup lines (but I see no point in having to dialup lines when you can have a DSL line)

No, the phone splitter allows 2 phones to answer...but it's still only one phone line. Therefore 2 phones can't dial-in at the same time.
Sorry, ya need another phone line.

You need to buy a router. On dial up though, your internet will be very slow if trying to use 2 at the same time
