As someone who has grown up with bright orange hair, I can only come up with one explanation. Jealousy.
If I remember correctly, the red hair gene is recessive. This has had a decreasing effect on the number of redheads in the population. Unfortunately, this means that we are both different and, in most cases, a minority, and all too often it is easier for others to make fun of differences than to enjoy them, especially when they have the weight of numbers.
Just keep your chin up and remember that most people, as individuals, would love to have hair like ours.

your not alone, i grow up with bright red hair, i used to get called name's but it did not really affect me that much cause i stood up to the bullies and sumtime's laughed at them as well, they soon stop if you have that attitude, i also agree with the other comments i think there is a bit of jealousy, that is normally a big reason why people will pick on sumone at school just simple they are jealous, i bet you get nice comments from adults about your hair thats mayby why they are jealous, the teachers at my school used to love my hair, another reason why bullies pick on people is they are usaully insecure about themselfsand pick on others to hide from the truth about themselfs
be proud of your hair dont let the bullies win you are unique, keep your chin up be happy and dont let the bullies see that they are getting to you even laugh with them remember you are unique

Definitely jealousy. I married a man with red hair and have two gorgeous red haired girls. Why pick a boring brunette or a bottle blond when you can have something a bit different. I'd like to see them bully Josh Homme (QOTSA - yummy!).

Get ready with a come-back. People bully people who don't stand up for themselves and who are, for whatever reason, different. There aren't many redheads - that's why you get bullied and why I used to be. I also note, retrospectively, that there were other gingers around me who weren't picked on, because they stood up for themselves.

I have never heard of that. Try going to a catholic school. I do, and there are more red-headed people here than I've ever seen before.
