On the wrong pet for a toddler answers - we have had pets such as hamsters, gerbils, chinchillas, cats and mice since the age of one. I will not be letting my son play with the hamster it is not a toy but I do want him to experience being around animals from a young age. He loves sitting up on the stool watching him waddle around his tank.

my first hamster was called hammy, my second daisy, my third big dave (he was huge, and when we took "him" to the vet at the end of his life, he was in fact "big deidre" lol, and last but not least (and probably running under the floorboards right now) is flower, good luck, im sure whatever you call it, your son will love it

Glad to see your additional details, well done.
Your son probably has some favourite characters in kids' programs such as Thomas the tank engine etc; why not let him choose a name among those for his pet? 'Diesel' is one of the engines, sounds nice and unusual for a hammie...
PS: a transparent plastic sphere is a great way (under supervision, still) to let hammie and chappie get close with out any risks to either...

When my boys where 3 and 1 we found a hamster in the field across the street (someone dummped her). Well my 3 year old pointed at her and said "honey" so that became her name. It worked out great because she was a yellow and white hammy. We only had her for a couple months and gave her away because she was too aggresive towards my kids (I guess being lost in the wild brings out the worst in them). So long story short let your kids name the hamster, they'll take pride in it, plus they will feal like it's there pet.

erm a noun so it's easy to learn and remember like chip or fish or use alliteration like hammy hamster/ harold hamster/ henry hamster.
my school (when i was about ages 5) and every other school i knew had a hamster called hammy so it must mean something if they name it the same thing around young children.

Nibbler - because it will nibble him. Hamsters aren't predictable enough for toddlers. You might have just made a mistake.

Other than that, Hammy. I like Hammy.

Your first hamster should always be called 'Hammy'

Mine was, and my best pal and next door neighbour, we used to take them out in prams!

Well I was only 4.

....for your toddler, or the hamster? .I've always thought Hammy was quite an appropriate name but, then again, perhaps the kids will take the p**s out of hm once he goes to school......
