During the Middle Ages, Islam was the major repository of most classical writings of the Greeks, Romans, Hebrews, and other earlier Meditation cultures. They had vast libraries and focused on saving ancient writing of stripes (especially those dealing with science, philosophy, medicine, and drama). The Renaissance happened in part when this writings (that Islam) had preserved started flowing back into Europe through the trade cities located in Italy.

Maisha I agree with you about Gizmo.

Islam gave Europe the numerical system that we use today, they preserved the writings of the great thinkers of antiquity, the medical idea of anatomy and surgery and they gave us the plans that built the ships that sailed to the new world.
Look at an Arab Dhow and a European Caravel and you see amazing similarities. The things that were lost in the sack of Baghdad in 1415 will never be known Tamberline put most of it citizens to the sword (killed them). And that just a few of the things they saved and gave to the west.
