I think that drug addiction has more to do with self discipline/ self control, and can't stand when people blame things like that on "addictive personalities." I have done drugs recreationally, and keep it just at that, "recreational", not an everyday thing where it takes over and wrecks my life. And I don't just mean smoking weed, I mean I've done it all, but if I do it today and tomorrow, then I stop. If I them again in another 4 months, or NEVER, them I'm cool. I am not trying to condone drug use, i just don't agree when people blame their addictions on something they couldn't help...

I totally agree with you. I have a friend who is a recovering alchoholic (5 years sober) but just can't seem to stop overabusing cold medicine. He blames everyone but himself when he slips. I think he is addicted to the way it makes him feel and just enjoys it so much that he can't stop. It makes no sense to me why he can't just STOP for good. I am glad there is someone else out there who sees this as i see it......

Here's the thing--- maybe you do not have an addictive personality, but possibly a careless one if you've "done it all".
I am a non-addictive personality, but I have no need desire to take any drugs for recreational purposes, including alcohol, but I am married to a man who is a recovering alcoholic. Now get this, he told me for years that he was not an alcoholic, and that he could stop anytime he wanted to. Guess what? He was wrong and ended up seeking help.
You are playing with fire. Stop taking drugs, drinking alchohol, or whatever immediately and go cold turkey even for "recreational" use. If you are non-addicted, this should be a piece of cake, and you should be able to have fun, relax, whatever without it. Can you do that?

i agree that it is possible for SOME people to be able to control there drug usage BUT when people look for drugs to make there 'pain' go away or the sadness etc.. then the problem occurs because then the mind starts to think that u need it to be 'happy' and it becomes a mind thing more than a self control thing and after a while u tend to see that it not always making u happy or feel better but making it worse... so after a while its just like water something u need to be healthy... because the body's use to it... and the mind is telling it that it needs drugs..thats also why drug addicts throw up and be sick for like a month after they quit drugs..

Well i think people get addicted to drug because they like the way it make them feel! The people that can't stop are the ones that have depression essues in my opion, so they turn to drugs cause it makes them forget all their worries and makes them feel relaxed! That is probably why they can not stop the addiction cause it makes then feel to good on it and they don't know what to do when they don't have the drug to make them forget there worries!

Well you kinda of contradicted your self. Having low self-control level is having an addictive personality. It is all part of the same thing. It is good I guess that you are able to not get addicted to drugs but there are different people who do get addicted because of their addictive personality.

People who live in their own world and believe they can't fall are headed for eventual failure.I believe it's referred to as a self inflated ego or egress. Some who use drugs to escape reality usually will one day have drugs as part of their own reality and won't be able to easily escape that one either. You are not invincible.Eventually the drugs will outsmart you. The higher you go up the ladder the further you fall. I don't believe in recreational or occasional drug use as being in control when you give yourself to them this way or any other way. It's also known as being in denial. You are addicted to your own illusion of being in control. So, that's a no-no.

yes there are such things as addictive personalities. but that dont mean they let things get out of control or if they do they reach their limit and go too far the other way...thats me btw. i can use things for a few weeks stop for months and go back to them for a few weeks question is why do we keep going back anyway if its not addition to something? you have an addictive personality if you have to go back to something even if you never feel the need to why do it again?

I don't think it's that simple. I've no problem with addiction to drugs/alcohol either, but those who do are not just weak-willed. There is a lot going on with brain chemistry, etc.

I don't agree with you.
I am just like you and there are lots of people like us and for us, what you say is true. But I think many people have different body chemistrys and actually do not have control for their actions. Ever see someone completely change personality after a couple beers? That's not to say what they do is OK but we have to have understanding for their lack of control.

the fact is that drugs ARE addicting...so when people blame their addiction its not like they're blaming someone else...they are taking resposiblity that it is THEIR addiction to deal with
