I use to go camping in the Netherlands quite often .The biggest reason I went to that country over all the others was because of the friendly attitudes of the dutch. They all had a sincere appreciation for Americans. I have been to Amsterdam and it is such a friendly and colorful city. Just remember that you are a guest , be respectful and avoid those types of places that anyone with some common sense would avoid in any big city.

I went to Amsterdam by myself two years ago and had no problems with safety. Of course, you need to use the same common sense you would in any large city (keep an eye on your things, be aware of what is going on around you at all times, etc.). I stayed at a hostel near the Vondelpark and it was clean, cheap and safe. I found pretty much everyone I met friendly and helpful. Most Dutch people speak English pretty well, it is taught in their schools from the elementary level, so communication was not a problem. Overall they are not very fond of our current president, and I fielded a couple of comments about this, but I found a friendly "Don't blame me, I didn't vote for him" diffused those situations. :) Otherwise, I was treated very well and I didn't sense any hostility toward Americans.

A couple of tips - don't miss the Anne Frank house. When walking around beware of all the bikes - everyone in Amsterdam rides a bike and they don't always pay attention to pedestrians. Renting a bike is a good idea, but do not let anyone try to sell you a "cheap bike" on the street. The public trams are also very easy to use and you can get pretty much anywhere you need to go with them.

Rick Steves and Lonely Planet both have very good guides to Amsterdam, consider buying or borrowing one of them before you go. Good luck!

We went to Amsterdam last year for a few days- it was great!
We travelled from UK by coach and stayed in a hotel not far from the city centre. Like any large town or city you have to have your wits about you- there are always dodgy characters about but we felt safe there. Of course some parts are a little dubious! but stick to the main areas where the other tourists are and you will be fine! Must sees- the Red Light Area- bizzare but fascinating! the canal trips, Anne Franks house, the coffee shops( but be careful as you may be offered something dodgy!). People sit around in the cafes smoking cannabis, very strange and off putting for one who doesn't! We also took a trip to a traditional village on the coast about an hours drive away- I think it was named Volendam- where the people who lived there wore traditional dutch costumes, it was really nice. Enjoy!

attempt the Heiniken museum, loose beer and glass (properly there replaced into while i replaced into there!) Canal excursions! Or there is the Nemo museum, Its kinda technology based yet you get entangled. stupid issues like making vast bubbles, technology experiments and a great view from the cafe roof over Amsterdam, we spent particularly some hours there merely having a laugh. there is unquestionably the Ann Frank domicile that's properly worth seeing yet won't be able to certainly be defined as mild hearted! you will could desire to flow to the purple mild district merely for a chuckle, all my hubby and that i do is walk via it and laugh at each and all of the revenues men attempting to vie on your money and on the state of distinctive the 'women'. yet we've by no potential left the line we merely walk via! Get a map and have a walk around distinctive the older areas of the city, different than for each and all of the intercourse, drugs and alcohol on furnish that's an exquisite city. desire you have exciting. P.s its a shame you do unlike artwork as there are maximum of artwork museums to make a call from alongside with a popular artwork one and the van gogh. even with the undeniable fact which you're able to go in direction of the van gogh museum as there's a great park interior of sight the place me and mate performed on the great piano embedded into the floor for a while!! (we were eating all day tho!!)
