Most of the people that are from the north and move to the south complain about the southern people. I really don't listen to many of them, however, when a high school drop out from the north implys that because of my accent, that I am stupid, it makes me mad.

I moved from Cincinnati to Tampa, Florida. I was a flight attendant for Delta and have spent a great deal of time in many different cities, and I don't find Southerners to be less intelligent than Northerners. In fact, I find them warm, inviting, and fun, which is why I moved here! I'm getting my Master's at USF, and I don't find anyone there to be behind classes I took up North. I'm surrounded by oceans, friendly people, no packed urban areas (even in Tampa, it's not like a northern city's areas, it's so GREEN here) , endless things to do from Busch Gardens and Orlando to snorkeling in crystal clear springs and diving in the ocean. And I've been wearing shorts all year. If people are smarter up there, KEEP IT! I think that the soft Southern drawl is mistaken for the hillbilly twang the North hears from migrating Appalachians, but it does NOT speak of stupidity. And I think my quality of life here is WAY better.

I think it has to do with soil. When the country was forming, the north found that it couldn't farm very well b/c of the soil; it was thin and rocky. Natually, cities grew up around factories moreso in the North. The South was able to farm cotton and tobacco and such because of the climate, so mostly small, farming towns grew up in the region. Because of this, the North was densely populated, meaning that more schools had to be built, and more people moved to the areas and brought their money, their ideas. The North was simply more industrious. They think this makes them smarter. If I had to talk like that, I'd look for something good to say about myself, too. And by the way, Southerners vote Republican because they have SENSE and VALUES and a belief in GOD and they're not too spineless to show it. Yank.

It's called tv. Southern people on television are usually sterotyped as stupid. I don't agree and I'm from the North but I wouldn't move south just because of personal experiences I have heard from others about how it's kinda like stepping back in time in some places ( as far as race and things like that).

I think its because the way of life is much slower in the south. I know alot of people in the south and most of them are very intelligent. The sexy southern drawl makes some people think those with it are slow as well. My distant kin were from the south and many people think I'm from Georgia or Tennessee because of a slight accent. Screw them if they think that.

Face it, the southern states consistently rank very low in quality of their schools.
SC has the second worse schools in the country, FL, GA, AL, and LA all have sub standard test scores relative to the national average.
Employers in the south are eager to hire 'yankees' because of their good work ethic and higher level of education.
I was raised in MN and was blessed with excellent schools, then moved to SC where I met Friends 30-50 years of age who could not spell well enough to write a check correctly or understand a motor vehicle purchase contract with out assistance. Very nice people, but not fortunate enough to get a good education. Southern schools have ripped off their students, graduating students who can't spell or read at even a 7th or 8th grade level.
Y'all ought to be rebels. Rebel against the school system that's robbed you and is robbing your children of a quality education.

What's the difference between a northern girl and a southern girl?
Northern girls say "Yes you can."
Southern girls say "Y'all can."

In GENERAL, southerners have a weaker education. That means that as a whole southern people get categorized as being "stupid." The education system in many southern states are ranked very low compared to those of northern states.

This of course does not mean that EVERYONE from southern states receives a poor education, but generally....yea. I, like you, don't like it when people make references like that though.

Sweeping generalizations can indicate a lower intelligence. Maybe it's not southerners in general they are complaining about. Maybe it's just you.

It has to do with stereotypes and socio economic backgrounds.

The south in the 1800 had very few rich people most were poor and un-educated. They also had a history of racism which indicates a lack of intelligence.

The south also tends to vote republican which indicates a lower IQ
