She's only 18 months old, so about $20. The rest will go into her college savings fund.
As she gets older, we'll do the 'one main gift with some accessories' thing our parents did for us (probably around $200 per kid each Christmas). I never felt shorted, so I think it was just right.
Now, EXCESSIVE is this chick I used to work with that spends $5,000 on each of her 3 kids every year! Talk about spoiled brats! They'll have to marry rich when they grow up, just to be happy.

Think about it in terms of need.
Does your kid NEED $500 worth of stuff. I tell ya, we have way too much sh** in the house that doesn't get played with after the first ten minutes anyway.
Imagine what even a portion of that money would do for kids who are lucky to get a candy cane for Christmas.
Have your kids take $100 of the money you would spend on them... and help them buy gifts for the sick kids at Children's Hospital or anywhere else there are unfortunate or needy kids and families.
That way your kids actually GET the spirit of the season to a degree. Giving - not necessarily getting - can be super rewarding.
cheers -allison
btw - Christmas is NOT about the birth of Christ - not historically. How would Jesus feel about us all spending our hard-earned money to give material gifts to each other instead of helping the poor? HA

WAY to much. I mean, ever since I was a kid it was like a $50 dollar MAX. $500 per child is way too much. You should mayeb spend $100, and put theother $400 towards a better cause. think of all those kidss who dont get a christmas at all.

$500...wow!! That is more than half of the monthly income of some ppl i know. It is great that you have that much money to spend, but I would not spend that much on a child. Children get so much they get bored and want more. Maybe you could put some away for savings or a vacation, or whatever. And I think it would be a great gift to your children to donate money to a charity of their choice in their name (maybe with some of your help). You can teach them the true meaning of Christmas--The birth of Jesus and what he represents--love and caring. And the gift of giving.

I usually spend around $250 on each kid. You have to remember Christmas is about the birth of Jesus and that it's not about getting presents.

It imagine that $500 money is only too a lot to spend on a toddler at Christmas time. it truly is only going to smash the youngster (somewhat in the journey that they are youthful). in the journey that they are older then I see that you will be able to spend slightly more advantageous than $one hundred on each and each and every.

We spent $500 on my stepdaughter and I spent $600 on my hubby. I do my shopping throughout the year though so I'm able to spread out my expenses.
