The glass I am looking at is 1/2" thick

In answer to Peter, this will be going on top of an old wine barrel. the top (mouth) is 22-1/2" across.

It is wholly dependent on the strength of the base. A half-inch table top is pretty heavy; it HAS to be able to support the weight. I think the width is OK. Try cutting a 42" circle out of cardboard and seeing how it looks first.

yes 42 to 48 inches is no problem. the weight of the glass should make it quite stable if you ensure a smooth gasket type of cushion between the glass and barrel top rim ... the glass shop that supplies the top should be able to advise and supply the proper material -- this will also help keep the glass from moving in a lateral direction (side to side)
