No I wouldn't be that persons friend, and I wouldn't accept those words even if the person was joking. You don' t joke around with friends calling them names, a friend is someone special, some one you can confide in and someone that sticks right by you in the good times and in the bad. A friend doesn't ridicules you.
Walk away look for another friend.

Well it really depends. If you think that your friend really meant it when they called you an idiot, then perhaps you should ask them what you did to make them feel that way. Of course, calling someone an "idiot" is never a nice thing to do, but many of the other words used in the same way don't get the same attention. I am not from the U.S., and I have found that people are extremely sensitive to being called "stupid" or "idiot" even when it is said in a cute endearing way. Not really sure where this extreme sensitivity comes from but it often causes things to get out of proportion. I don't know, if your friend really feels that you are stupid or an idiot then perhaps just tell them that you are not interested in having friends that don't respect you enough to express feelings without insults.

It matters the tone of voice. I call my friends idiots or morons all the time but they always know I'm joking. If you said they were stupid and really meant it, then you better try to work things out, starting with, "I'm sorry", then go from there.

I would be cordial with someone who called me that, but no, not friends. Not unless some amends were made. Be kind to this "somebody", but don't try and become buddy buddy just so you can feel better by being the bigger person. If its someone your really close with, tell them how you feel. Tell them if it hurt your feelings, but if you arent good friends, ignore that person by killing them with kindness.

Love is stronger than hatred. Forgive and you will receive the same treatment from others. Allow time to pass, and cool down before you try and resolved things. but dont leave the wound open

Uhhhh.....NO! If they called you stupid/idiot they probably have been calling you that in their head for a long time now, but it just finally came out. They don't value you at all....slowly drop him/her.
