It's genetics. Some are born red-heads, turn blonde over a couple years, then brunette. Still others start with dark hair and get light brown a decade later.
When your parents' genes for hair color mix they don't split right down the middle giving you a solid color your whole life. You might be 1/4 blonde, 1/2 brunette, and 1/4 black hair. Based on how the genes line up, you'll get each color at different points in your life.
If you want to be a certain color, you can dye your hair, but it'll grow out every month to two months and you'll need to reapply the dye. Talk to a stylist at a salon for advice on what works best with your color hair.

I'm the same as Cheezy. My hair was wheat blond when I was a little girl and it has slowly, slowly gotten darker (dull brown) over time. Although a week in the sun and it is pretty blond again. Then there is my husband who had pretty dark hair when he was a baby but now it is almost sandy blond.

I don't know, but that happened to me too. I'm more of a dark blond than a brunette, but it's mix.
Weird.

I had super-blond hair as a kid. It stayed blond until I was in seventh grade and then it started getting progressivley darker. Now my hair is a ruddy, light brown. It was the hormones. I curse them - I loved that blond hair.

That is me too( I dye mine). My mother is mixed race with a more tan color skin and dark brown hair. My dad is blond/blue eyes. I was born looking like my dad in coloring, but as I got older my hair turned to my mother's color. I can't explain it, it just did.
